Why playing a sport is important?

From my childhood days, I have had a strong passion for both watching and participating in sports. I can vividly recall requesting my older sister to assist me in joining the local cricket team, even though they were older than me at the time. Sports have played a crucial role in my life, and I firmly believe that they promote positivity, foster connections, and invigorate one's daily routine.

Recalling my school years, I would engage in cricket matches with 20 of my peers on a busy street across from my house. Despite receiving complaints from neighbors, my mother never intervened, understanding how much happiness it brought me. While I may not be particularly active, I always prioritize sports and make myself accessible, whether it's under the blazing sun or during spooky nights.

Like many other typical Indian children, I had aspirations of becoming a sportsperson. However, my parents did not support me in pursuing this career path, although they did not strongly oppose it. I strongly believe that engaging in sports goes beyond just honing athletic abilities; it helps in developing strategic thinking, leadership skills, and team spirit.

Due to my dedication and active participation in the game, I have naturally emerged as a leader in the majority of the teams I have been a part of. I willingly embrace leadership responsibilities whenever presented with the chance, as it involves not only striving for victory but also uniting individuals towards a shared objective. The dynamics of playing a team sport closely mirror those of collaborating in a corporate environment. Despite diverse personalities and varying viewpoints, the ultimate aim remains a collective one.

Recalling an event from my college years, there was a cricket tournament held annually between various departments. In my department, we had skilled players capable of creating a formidable team. However, a rift had formed between two groups within the department following a silly altercation during our college days. Despite this division, we agreed to take part in the tournament as individuals rather than as a unified team.

As the tournament commenced, we found ourselves facing a formidable team in the first game without a clear strategy. Opting to bowl first, we gradually gained an advantage through outstanding performances. Each wicket that fell allowed us to regroup, strategize, and implement our plans as a united team. The team's spirits lifted, displaying dedication and support for every ball bowled. Witnessing this as the team captain filled me with joy, and our efforts were rewarded with a memorable victory. This triumph not only brought us closer but also solidified our bonds as a close-knit group of friends. I even made a crazy Facebook post about it in those days :)

A snippet of the FB post after the win

Sports has a way of setting aside your ego, revealing your passion, instilling discipline, and guiding you in the right direction. We have encountered similar experiences in our professional life through activities like ice breakers, team lunches, and outings, all aimed at fostering stronger connections.

I highly suggest that parents encourage their children to pursue any sport they are interested in, providing guidance and support, as it is not only about developing game skills and physical strength.
